But when news reports began to paint a horrible picture of destruction in the tiny nation’s capital, he immediately jumped into his car for the six-hour drive to rescue his wife Jillian, a Christian aid worker. (Photo: CBS News)

Jillian had managed a 10-second cell phone emergency call to her husband to tell him she and another worker with Haitian Ministries, had been trapped underneath piles of concrete debris—all that remained of their 3-story home. Continue reading

Death of Rev. Theodore Williams

Rev. Theodore Williams founder of IEM , breathed his last on 29th December 2009.

Rev Dr Theodore Williams was the founder General Secretary of the Evangelical Fellowship of India which was started in 1965.

With one missionary, a few hundred rupees and a bicycle, this Faith Mission grew. From one missionary, it has grown now to family of 580 missionaries and office staff.

A Christian Martyr in Pakistan

Jesus tells us that the first shall be last, the least will be the greatest in the kingdom. He elevates repentant sinners and tax-collectors above Pharisees and wealthy leaders. And through His apostle Paul, He reminds us that He chose the foolish things of this world, the weak, and the despised, to show the glories of his wisdom.

A recent story coming from Pakistan seems to fit this pattern exactly. In late October, at Islamabad’s International Islamic University, an Islamic suicide bomber tried to attack the women’s side of campus. But there worked a lowly janitor, Pervaiz Masih, who like so many of the 2 percent Christian minority in this 95 percent Muslim country are relegated to the most menial jobs in society-garbage collectors, sewage workers, and servants.

Mainline Protestant churches’ gradual decline shown

A survey released this week by The Barna Group indicates stormy seas ahead for mainline Protestant churches.

The survey shows that five key mainline Protestant churches were dominant forces in the 1950s – American Baptist Churches, the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Presbyterian Church (USA), the United Church of Christ and the United Methodist Church. The number of churches among those denominations has dwindled from 80,000 to 72,000 in about the last 60 years. More significantly, the mainline groups now only make up about 20 percent of Protestant churches with the rise of evangelical, Pentecostal and non-denominational congregation.

The survey further shows that attendance has been flat in these congregations for decades despite tremendous population growth. Barna indicates that this is because there have been a handful of new attendees to keep numbers level as other members level or older members die. Also worrisome for these denominations are statistics which show the amount of volunteerism and loyalty to a single church in a traditional setting is on a steep downward slope statistically. The average age of senior pastors in these churches has shot up from 48 to 55 in the last 10 years, indicating that many pastors are delaying retirement and are not being substantially replaced by enough younger pastors.

‘Twitter Bible’ converts scripture into Mini Messages!

A new so-called “Twitter Bible,” which summarizes the over 31,000-verse Bible into nearly 4,000 short-form tweets, is being released at the Frankfurt Book Fair this week.

Formally named And God Decided to Chill, the German language book is the compilation of tweets by more than 3,000 German Christians who participated in the church project earlier this year.

In honor of the Pentecost holiday, German Christians used the micro-blogging service Twitter to summarize 3,906 Bible sections into 140 character messages, according to Berlin-based newspaper “The Local.” Though the project was scheduled for May 20-30, it was completed 37 hours ahead of schedule and achieved a world record.

The tweets were sometimes entertaining, such as the tweet describing God’s day of rest after creation: “Thank God! It’s Sunday!” (Read full story here…)

Church gives fresh meaning to ‘offering’ plate

offering(CNN) — The pastor of a non-denominational church in Argyle, Texas, passed around the collection plate to his congregants earlier this year — and asked them to take money from it.

Donations at the Cross Timbers Community Church had slumped because of the economic downturn. Pastor Toby Slough thought that his congregants had to be hurting, too.

His gesture, instead, was met with an unexpected response: The church had its highest offering ever.  (Read full story on CNN website…)
